Published Author – RESPECT IT’S NOT ENOUGH!

After concluding my 30-year correctional career, I felt compelled to aid and assist my fellow criminal justice personnel, with combating the stress, fatigue, and other adversities that so often accompany their occupation. Throughout my career and into retirement, I continue to counsel many criminal justice employees who are trying to pick up the pieces of their broken lives and shattered remnants of their family.
While writing my book, it occurred to me that we have programs in place to aid in the reaction and effects of PTSD and other deadly illnesses, like high stress levels and burnout (after the damage has already occurred). But we are negligent in prevention. Taking a proactive approach to inform our staff and potentially detour these deadly illnesses from occurring and wreaking havoc in the first place. We all get “affected” but far too many get “infected” and get robbed of those things in life that matter the most.

I would like to make myself very clear. According to all stats and professionals in the field, there is no surefire way to prevent PTSD. But there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of ever allowing it to develop. According to the americanaddictioncenters.org – Only 5% of violent and traumatic instances on the job is enough to give corrections officers PTSD. Those in high-risk occupations to develop PTSD also include Military, Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Emergency Medical Personal and First Responders.
Traumatic events, stress, fatigue, distress... These can lead to work and family conflict, non-adaptive coping skills, burnout, psychological disorders, and in extreme cases even suicide. However, in its wake all have a negative effect on the individual person, their families, and your organization.

From brand new academy cadets to seasoned officers and supervisors, my class instruction is loaded with a plethora of vital information to help contend with the “shock factor” and navigate one’s home life and work balance.
In closing, after a terrible childhood and a thirty-year correctional career, I sure do wish that I was made aware of the information and resources contained in this material to combat the issues that weighed so heavy in my head and on my heart.
Upon your invite and request I will provide in service training at your facility that will include the following pertinent information.
My Standard Training Proposal:
-
Give staff a clear vision of the commencement and progression of PTSD and other adverse conditions often associated with their career.
-
Effectively teach and train staff to be intentional and proactive, throughout their career to protect their physical, mental, and spiritual health.
-
Provide staff with tools, ideas and healthy habits along with work and non-work-related activities, to defer or even eliminate these illnesses from ever becoming part of their life and personal story.
-
To build morale, diminish hopelessness, reestablish integrity, and strengthen the criminal justice family unit, both inside and outside the home and workplace.
SIDE NOTE:
-
The Lesson: "Battle for Criminal Justice, Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Health"
-
As I teach the lesson plan material, I will incorporate many of my personal examples, stories, and interactions based on my thirty years of correctional experience.
The major content of the lesson plan material is derived from my book RESPECT IT’S NOT ENOUGH! I self-published my book through WestBow Press, therefore I personally retain all copyrights, not the publisher. The book is available for purchase and review at WestBow Press, Amazon, B&N, CBD and other outlets.
I realize that my book is written from a very “Christian” perspective. My lesson plan "Battle for Criminal Justice Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Health" is not. The training approach is from a neutral position, unless requested otherwise.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
